tomahawk x in game
June 30, 2015 - by David Zatz

The SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo car in Gran Turismo 6 is now ready for use on the Sony PlayStation 3 gaming console. The car is set up as a 2035 model (presumably SRT will be back by then), and comes in three versions, starting with the 1,007 Tomahawk S, moving up to the GTR-S, and finishing with the Tomahawk X.  All have a powertrain that includes a 7-liter V10 with a pneumatic drive system for the front wheels. The X includes active aerodynamic panels for higher downforce when needed.

The car is optional in the game with release 1.20. There is also a seasonal event which allows people to earn the car rather than buying it; the event runs through July 24, 2015. (...) →

Is this the 2017 Chrysler minivan? (No!)

June 30, 2015 - by David Zatz

This photo of what appears to be the 2017 Chrysler Town & Country floated our way recently. It has a 200-like front appearance, as our sources told us we should expect.

Update: UN4GTBL wrote in the Allpar forums that it is actually not a new minivan, showing the full photo from  It is, in fact, a Chrysler 200, which was circulated on social media sites as being the next-generation minivan — cropped and with grain added, as you see above.

For more on what we should expect from next-generation minivans, which are likely being piloted at the Windsor plant, along with camouflaged spy shots, see our full 2017 Chrysler minivans page. (...) →

65-car recall: Grand Cherokee, Durango

June 29, 2015 - by David Zatz

FCA US (the former Chrysler Corp.) has discovered a problem with the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango surprisingly quickly, with around 7,800 made but only around 65 sold to customers. The rest are either in transit or at dealerships (around 1,800 are still awaiting inspection for international sale); these will be fixed before they move on.

FCA US is phoning customers who have taken deliver of the problematic SUVs, and will send personnel to inspect them on-site to see if they were built with a suspension part that was not properly heat-treated. This could cause breakage; it was not apparent when the SUVs were built.

Concerned customers can enter their VIN into or to see if they are affected. (...) →

Inside the Giulia (new photos)

June 29, 2015 - by David Zatz

The 510-horsepower Alfa Romeo Giulia, the brand’s brand new midsized, rear wheel drive sedan developed at great cost, was recently launched in Italy. However, the company did not release photos of the interior, tantalizing audiences by flashing blurry images on a screen but showing only a handful of exterior shots.

An Allpar source was at the unveiling, but armed only with a cellphone. He still caught the dashboard, detail of the steering wheel, and an overview of the carbon fiber seat structures. These have just now been added to our 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia page (go there now).  (...) →

Hellcat production to soar

June 29, 2015 - by David Zatz

Dodge has already started producing more 707-horsepower supercharged Hemi V8 engines than they had intended to, according to Dodge leader Tim Kuniskis, speaking with Automotive News’ Larry Vellequette.

Unlike the soon-to-be-competing Shelby Mustang Super Snake, which boasts 750 horsepower but is not factory-made (and presumably is also not factory warrantied) and costs far more, the Hellcat is assembled and installed by FCA itself, and is part of a complete system including heavy-duty cooling that allows continued racing at full power.

Mr. Kuniskis told Mr. Vellequette that they had sold 88,000 Dodge Chargers and Challengers, including 4,000 Hellcats. The Hellcat is not available for ordering as the factory catches up on existing demand. The 392-powered Scat Pack Challenger is also sold out, according to Dodge’s CEO. (...) →

Viper victory at Watkins Glen

June 29, 2015 - by Bill Cawthon

The No. 93 Dodge SRT Viper with Marc Goossens at the wheel took the checkered flag at Sunday’s rain-soaked Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. Goossens also set a new GT-Daytona lap record for the Watkins Glen course.

It was the second GT Daytona-class victory in three starts for the Riley Motorsports Viper in the four-race Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup series. It was also the second Viper victory in the 2015 Tudor United Sportscar Championship.

The class-winning team of Goossens, Cameron Lawrence and Al Carter were 16th overall in the six-hour race.

The weather was a major player all weekend. Heavy rains in Watkins Glen, New York, forced the cancellation of qualifying on Saturday. During Sunday’s race, more rain led to a 14-minute red flag due to track flooding. (...) →

Fiat 124 Spider (“Fiata”) spy shots

June 28, 2015 - by David Zatz

Christopher Chrouch has spotted what appears to be a Fiat version of the Mazda Miata being tested in the Detroit region. The car, developed in cooperation with the Japanese automaker, has already been shown in Mazda form.

Fiat is to use their own powertrains, with the 160-hp 1.4 turbo likely in the United States, though they could also shake things up by using the turbocharged 1.75 liter Alfa Romeo four-cylinder.  The car is likely to be called the Fiat Spider (or Fiat 124 Spider) after a classic car, and is due for model-year 2016.

The “Fiata” or Fiat Spider is to be built in Japan by Mazda itself. An Abarth version is all but certain.  The weight goal is reportedly around 2,200 pounds.   (...) →

FCA’s best June market share since 2007?

June 28, 2015 - by Bill Cawthon

Fiat Chrysler’s U.S. market share is seen as hitting 12.6% when June sales are reported next Wednesday.

Based on the average of forecasts from and, Fiat Chrysler is expected to post the largest growth of any of the major automakers with sales up 10.6% and volume up by more than 18,000 additional sales.

“Kelley Blue Book anticipates positive numbers from nearly all manufacturers in June 2015, but Fiat Chrysler Automobiles could see the largest year-over-year gains,” said Gutierrez. “The surge in popularity of utility and truck models this year has been beneficial for Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep and RAM brands, helping push the manufacturer to its highest U.S. market share since 2007.”

Jeep Renegade sales are growing now that supply issues have been resolved.  (...) →

“MoparNorm” Memorial, Donations

Norm Layton
June 27, 2015 - by David Zatz

Last week, Norman Layton, founder of Sweptline Products (for modifying Power Wagons and Jeeps) and former NASCAR pit crewman, died of an unexpected heart attack at the age of 65. He was still active at the time and was working on repairs to a custom-made racing vehicle for Team 4540.

His daughter, Jillian, wrote that services for “MoparNorm,” as he was known to readers of both Allpar and the Chrysler blog, are being held on July 1, at 2 pm, at the Bethany of Montclair Church, 9950 Monte Vista Ave, Montclair, California 91763.

Co-worker Mike Bedwell wrote, “Tina Layton would like for anyone that would like to send donations that it would go to in memory of Mopar Norm Layton. (...) →

New Mopar Challenger Drag Pak

June 26, 2015 - by David Zatz

The 2016 Dodge / Mopar Challenger Drag Pak was unveiled today, boasting a choice of supercharged 354 Hemi or naturally aspirated 426 Hemi engines. The car is meant for racing only, and costs $99,426 for the 426 and $109,354 for the supercharged V8.

These drag racing cars are designed for the Sportsman class, and are race-ready. They are “designed to ignite the passion of the grass-roots car racers,” according to Mopar’s sales chief.

Dale Aldo from the Motorsports Marketing Team said that past Drag Paks (from 2011 on) have been successful, and that the cars were built to win races, not for on-road driving. They are the first supercharged Drag Paks.

They can cover the first 60 feet in just over a second, and do the quarter mile consistently in the eight-second range, and end up at 150 mph. (...) →
